Can You Cross a Competitior's Track?

I'm playing through the first campaign, and one of my tasks is to build an express train from Philadelphia to Boston, but my competitor's track around New York is in the way. Will the game allow me to cross it (with a bridge or a tunnel, I assume) or do I have to go around it somehow?
