It the same game as Railway Empire 1 but better.
The graphics had a major upgrade, feels like a mix between cell shading and watercolor and look fabulous. The details of the new buildings/towns/people and train upgrades are fabulous. The new look really nails the feel like you are in the 1800's from the towns to the countryside. Music and cut-scenes improved too
While they are appear to be the same maps with the same cities, the distance between the cities seems further (using memphis and nashville as test), allowing for more track construction options. Noticed more and new resources.
I miss the old city and industry screens when clicking on a city, it's now a toned down version from the first game, still gives the same info but I miss the old view with a picture of the city and the buildings, the new UI in this regard feels like it's missing something. Overall though the UI is an improvement but it's still the same stuff.
Track laying feels improved and the new track switches are a nice feature. I've not noticed any difference with the AI but it's hard to tell in this short of time.
So many companies do a sequel and ruin it by changing the entire game formula, that did not happen here but instead they simply upgraded the game in many aspects. Be interesting to see how the feedback goes but I'm happy with it so far.
Well I mean there are various changes like 8 tracks, automated signal, some new trains and tech, no more warehouses except in stations, a big one for many will be the multiplayer/co-op mode and how it is handled. Like I said I'm going to be curious to see the feedback on this one is and how the community reacts. It feels like the same game but better except in a few areas.
But I will still support part 2, because I hope that this will further establish or expand the series.
I did not realize the game was 45 USD, I was playing it via gamepass PC. That's a tough recommendation at that price - I would have guessed 29.99

Now I'm really interested to see the review knowing the high price point and if people are happy with the changes.
Having not played it yet, based on this thread and the review video, it sounds like it'd be more of a "2.0" patch or major DLC, because of the graphics upgrade, but honestly by the end of its run, RE had quite large maps with tons of resource variety in the Workshop. I was hoping the Store page was underselling the new content but after seeing what others have to say, this certainly feels like it could have been an evolution of RE, rather than a new standalone title.
Of course, I bought the deluxe pre-order because I truly loved RE and will generally support anything from Kalypso. And RE got a lot of new content in the form of DLC, so I doubt very much this will be all we get out of RE2.
But yeah, if it's really the same era, limited new mechanics, similar variety of engines and consist... that's a disappointment. Tropico 6 was a much larger incremental improvement over Tropico 5.
Honestly, I think the problem is... Gaming Minds Studios is not Kalypso's A-team, or even its B-team. Their best dev partner is unquestionably Haemimont, and Limbric / Realmforge did a phenomenal job with T6. Although RE1 was an excellent original title, GMS has a clear pattern of producing very disappointing sequels. Port Royale 4, Patrician IV, Grand Ages Medieval... their last really good game before RE was Darkstar One, and that was... 17 years ago.
I am waiting to see what AI improvements and game play features, especially for stable multiplayer. Many of us are not interesting in co-op, but want competitive MP to compete with one another.
The biggest issues from last iteration was that the resources would suddenly "flip" on you while all your trains were in transit to their next station, and now you lost all that $$$ because you can't deliver those goods, and have to micro manage every train to get new loads set up.
Ideally it would be nice to have the AI set up so you can tell the train to pick up best goods available at station A which station B wants. Trying to micro manage 8-12+ trains without some form of AI help on getting things to transition correctly makes it a more frustrating experience.
