Even with track irons and stupid directions etc trains do nothing most of the time
It has helped me point out missed directionals and missing grid irons more times than placing single track routes.
I play CUSTOM map from 1850 and usually from St. Louis or Kansas,
I set up Three station BEER, MEAT, CLOTH,
4 Tracks between each. YES 4.
2 track is the Express. and 2 track is Freight.
You have the Middle 4 tracks as the main lines.
The Outside 2 tracks are your feeder for incoming goods.
Now incoming goods should be COWS, Grain, Corn, Logs. Wool. To the correct mainline station.
It also wise to set up Warehouses on each of the main line stations.
But only store GRAIN, CORN, LOGS.
I can assure you the cities will grow.
Do Not Set Minimum Loads, waste of effort.
You can connect a small suger farm with one track. If you attack it to a not otherwise used station track at your destination it works without any problem. If you attack it to a double tracked mainline I suggest to make the first part of your sugerline double tracked for one train length in order to get a signal before entering the main line.
It works and it also looks like a situation you find often in real life. (A track layout that creates blocks to make spaces to let a train from the branc line wait to enter the main line at 'a good moment' without blocking trains entering the branch line. It also serves to free the mainline from a train to the branch line even with an occupied branch line.).
This works well. It is not as simple as RE1 but it has the same effect. And if you want to run 2 trains make the siding 2 train lengths. I have done both with the expected results.
Im still on the first chapter in campaign.
Do yourself a favor.
1. Finish the tutorial. (And do it slowly to 'absorb' and learn. It's limited to the most important things you'll have to know).
2. Then read the Tips & Tricks. (It's a (condensed) game manual; take also your time to realy understand how the game works and what is offered in the game).
3. Replay the whole tutorial. (You will see that you do it much faster then the fist time and a lot of the things included make more sens).
4. Start again with the first chapter of the campaign.
