Express Status on Short Routes

I'm having difficulty in earning express status on very short routes, like between Kansas City and Topeka. I suspect it's a matter that the train just does not have enough distance to reach the speed necessary for long enough to be considered a fast line. I am looking for anyone else's thoughts.

Hello!, assuming you are using express trains, do you have the fastest ones available for the time in the research tree?
Another issue may be rails gradients. More than 2% and your trains have not enough power, may cause speed slow down in certain sections.

Try using the fastest train with a caboose only , and maximum one rail car for a few return visits.

Garchei, i do have the fastest trains and the grade is flat, and running crews at maximum bonus.
