A problem with train maintenance
Here is an issue I just rain across today.

As you know, whenever you build a station, you get the option to add up to 2 buildings to it. One of the add-ons that seems to be of prime importance to me is the maintenace shed. With city stations I don't have a problem, as I can add one quite easily. but when it comes to rural stations, I have to prioritize hotels and warehouses over maintenance sheds - because I just have to.

Today I noticed a yellow breakdown alert on one of my trains. When I clicked on it, the green bar that shows the HP of the locomotive, or whatever they're called, was empty. This was a train running between two rural stations, which as I stated before, don't have maintenance sheds on them. And before anyone asks, yes I did build the special maintenace building next to the track. I thought it might help when this problem arises, it doesn't.

Then, as I kept watching the train in question, it started moving again and then it kept going as if nothing was wrong. The green bar was still empty, and it stayed empty all the while I kept watching it, and yet the train didn't break down again. I don't know if this is a bug, a feature, or just an oversight.

I don't know what to do about this issue. There's no way I can sacrifice any of the add-on slots and not put up my hotels and my warehouses. I was even thinking I might have to put the game down. If it's not a problem though, and trains just keep going like that, then I don't have to. It still feels wrong though.

I don't suppose there's a chance of having three add-on slots for stations in the future...?

I should mention, just FYI, that I only play in sandbox mode. I'm not interested in the economic side of the game, all I want is the giant train set.

If you play in sandbox mode you could just put in a extra station with a maintenance shop on that connection between the two stations and let only that train in question stop there for the maintenance. If needed keep two tracks free for the through trains and lead the train in question to a platform on a siding.

As far as I know a train without maintenance, water, sand or oil keeps running, but has more change on a breakdown and is from time to time slower. I didn't see trains without maintenance that didn't have problems.

The 'special maintenance building' doesn't do maintenance on your trains, but reduces the risk of breakdowns within the highlighted circle. If you use a lot of those buildings (with high settings) you probably have a massive reduced number of breakdowns. That could be the reason that you see no problems for that train, even without maintenance.

It seems that making three slots for station extensions isn't something that will be considered, because you can have more stations in a city and add allready six station extensions in each city. Outside cities you can build as many stations as you like.

If you play in sanbox mode there is nothing that stops you to make a special station for maintenance for one of your rail lines).

Personally, I don't know why you go for hotels at rural stations. I only use them if the route is too narrow for a bypass track. I use maintenance as default and maybe warehouse if I need to create exchange hubs.
Why not.
The hotel is looking good and generates a lot of money (which is not very interresting in the sand box.).
You can make a hub for pax and mail in the middle of a area with a limited number of towns (i.e. in the middle of Ireland). If you run all your pax lines to that hub and do your maintenance in the cities at the end of the lines you'll have a good system for the expresses. A postoffice at the other side of the station adds even more money.
My passenger stations all have the Mail and restaurant buffs. I create a station halfway between cities for maintenance, set it as a stop for that purpose only.
Mail and restaurant buffs generate big cash.
All NY "rural" stations, ie coal mines, have maintenence. All my freight stations in cities also have maintenence.
I am playing custom game, no warehouses, no cheats, whole USA map, it is vast now, and going great.
Now all that is making me wish I could snap a quick station or two to the already laid out tracks on which the affected trains are running. Which I know is not possible, but just so I don't have to go back and redo the work on those tracks.

I would like a Quick Snap on feature for a station, that sounds interesting.

I never use hotels.

If you are in sandbox mode.. Just build a station between the two rural stations. You can place a station anywhere you want. Run your line from rural station to new station to rural station.. Add a maintenance depot to the new station.

What do you mean by "generates a lot of money?"

Not the 'hotel' itself, but by making a good network with a 'station to change trains' as a central hub. A restaurant or a postoffice over there can add extra money.
