Decided to take a look at the BIOS and it was actually from 2019. Updated – and I kid you not, it solved the crash. Shader compilation still needed some "off and on again", but at the end I got through it and to the actual game. Who would have guessed

ya its wild sometimes what can be whonky cos of something so out of mind like the BIOS. Then again, it is the brains of the entire operation so it goes to show, and like you did, take care of your PC.

Not gloating, but like I do regular clean driver installs and at least yearly check on what version ol' BIOS is at on the Asus website. Never had this game crash once. In fact, don't really deal with too many games crashing, failing to boot, having driver issues etc. Can't all just be luck right.

Hello, sir. We have released the patch 1.1 and tried to fix some issue with fps drops, but this issue could be still exist. I've seen some topic and advice about that https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3372028357&searchtext=fps+drops for example.

We will continue to work on this issue. Sorry for your nor smooth experience.

cool, hopefully you got someone working behind the scenes to fix performance in heavy npc areas, the performance loss is ridiculous, thanks.

Happy holidays GSC, enjoy your time, and thank you for continually working on this game, and responding to the community. It has been frustrating, but we also haven't had a game this good around for a VERY long time. So people that complain and talk crap, try to give some empathy, I know it's frustrating when the game is sooooo damn cool and it crashes every 5 min, but well get there. Hopefully now we can all play it lol.

Try turning the compilation off, get to the game, let it load so that you can walk around. After that you can try enabling the warmup back. That together with the BIOS update worked for me.
