Can I knock out enemies?

I am doing the Sphere mission at the moment and managed to get unnoticed into the basement of the Sphere. But now my luck ran out, one of the soldiers looks right into the direction of the door I have to go through.

Tried to lure him away with a bolt, but that alerted the second guy in the same room.

I use V for melee attack, but I need four hits with the back of my pistol to his body before he passes out. That is more then enough time for him to call nearby soldiers to his help.

Is it possible to knock out enemies with a single melee hit? Or is it impossible at all to knock someone out in this game?

Yes, knifing enemies from behind is stealth, but I try to just send them to sleep.
