What you say may be technically true, but there is no practical way out of the lesser restoration zone, unless you can walk on water, launch yourself with an anomaly without dying from fall, clip thru a wall, or some other glitch. Maybe if you spend an hour or more pushing some debris to the eastern checkpoint you can go over gate or wall, but otherwise I am skeptical.
This, it sounds like what's been introduced here is a way to ''explore most of the zone'' and the only catch is you can't play the story.
Much better off going through the lesser zone, could even rush through the main missions if you'd like, and then once the checkpoints open you have the whole map to explore with no caveats.
