(Which makes sense since their "police" role with government sponsorship has been taken by the Ward).
Where has this been confirmed from the devs?
Its a staple in the STALKER series for there to be some type of choice of faction you want to side with, wheather its you literally joining them like in Clear Sky, or its you "siding" with them like in like in CoC/CoP, both of which effected your standing with them.
So is it more like CoP where the player can interact and do missions for certain factions, but they are not "joined" with them (like a Mercenary)?
I have not looked much into this games systems but I assumed factions would play a big role as they did in the other games. Only Clear Sky had the option to join up with certain factions from my memory, but in all games your affiliation with each faction was effected through story decisions, who you attack, who you help (side missions),..etc, so I hope that aspect is still here, along with the a-life system that made these games so immersive.
You can only work for them, not join them. Same as in SoC.

This is perfectly fine imo and as I expected. Only Clear Sky allowed you join some of factions so as long as we still get to interact with them in different ways the CORE Stalker experience will still be there
You couldnt join any of the factions in any of those games, merely pick who to help and who to shoot at.
This is false. In Clear Sky you were essentially a mercenary and you 100% could join Duty, Freedom, Bandits and Loners, it was part of the whole "faction wars" mechanic of that game.
This simple wiki will explain how it worked in CS https://stalker.fandom.com/wiki/Faction_Wars
Now in CoC and CoP you were merely "siding" with certain factions and doing odd jobs for them, but you were not really able to "join" them.
