On the edge...Again
I'm at the very end of the On the Edge quest. I've been playing the whole thing on the latest patch, no major bugs encountered until the final showdown (after talking to Gaffer).

I proceed to leave Zalissia, hear the radio message about the attack, come back and defend the town. After eliminating all the enemies (with major help from the spawned friendly squads) I'm being summoned to hear the victory speech in the main hall. However, after the dialogue reaches it's end, nothing happens. The quest is not resolved, when I try to leave the town I hear the "town is safe" message, but nothing happens afterwards.

I've noticed the following:
- the 'kill the monolithians' objective is not completed
- the victory speech does not result in any awards for completing the quest
- the 'kill the recon squad' objective is failed even though I've already completed it
- the recon guy is occasionally stuck outside in a fighting pose, aiming at something in the distance (there's nothing there)
- if I leave and progress the story and then come back, the situation is the same but talking to Gaffer crashes the game

Any solutions for this? Should I just redo the whole quest?

So I started a completely new game with patch 1.1.3, can confirm its still bugged for me (I was able to turn in all quests but 1) where Gaffer keeps giving me 1000 credits for dealing with Hamster. And if I leave the area, I get the event that Zalissya is fallen :(

Same thing here, it's just bugged to god awful ♥♥♥♥. New patches made a lot of things even worse imo. Talking to Gaffer just makes my game crash every time. So all you can do is just ignore the side quest for now.

That's pretty disapointing as I really wanted to wrap up this quest before following with the rest of the story. I was willing to redo the whole thing but if there's no point I'll just wait for future patches.

Let me write my own experience,

I had almost no casualties and went to listen to the victory speech. After the speech was over, the quest was still there. I left the village. This time, the quest went without a positive tick. But when I returned to the village, everyone was thanking me for helping.

Ok, so after some further testing I've found out that this is probably tied to the Monolith spawns around the town during the final wave. For some reason, they appear and disappear as mission markers constantly. Also, some of them simply stand in place instead of attacking (especially the group north of the town). I've tried various ways to make them move, but it had no effect. I suspect that either they're not spawning entirely, or the new A-Life fix is confusing the original mission objective tracking and it somehow counts other spawns (mutants, NPCs) as the enemy. Is there a way to report it to the devs?

Bugs can be reported to the devs here:

I've already reported this one. but I'm sure another report wouldn't hurt...

I was finally able to beat the mission (after countless attempts). Here's what worked for me: I've done the quest again, in the following order: kill the recon squad, retrieve Warlock's weapon, find the medical tools, visit the guide's hut
However, I think the above was less important than the following:
- before talking to Gaffer, I've searched the area and made sure that no enemy spawns are around (there was a military squad which was quickly wiped out)
- I've talked to Gaffer, received the SEVA suit (recon squad subtask was still marked as failed)
- travelled to the west of the town, just far enough to hear the radio message calling for help
- Went back to the town, started the fight with the Monolithians along the spawned allied units
- [KEY DIFFERENCE FROM PREVIOUS ATTEMPSTS] once I've reached the spot next to the entrance to the town hall I took cover and looked at the radar - the Monolith groups started marching towards the town hall as soon as they spawned. That way I knew something went right.
- Most of my squad got wiped out but I just held ground and eliminated the approaching Monolithians
- Went inside the town hall to hear the victory speech. Besides the usual dialogue I've also had an ending part regarding the wounded technician.
- When the speech was over, the quest ended. However, the main objective was marked in grey as "no longer necessary"
- the town was transformed - everybody was moved to the town hall, hamster is there. Everyone offers me great prices and declares friendship.
Phew. Now I can continue with the story I guess. The key difference here is, I think, that if the battlefield in the town is clear enough it allows the mission scripts to continue as intended and the Monolith units are spawned correctly starting to attack right away.

TL;DR
There's a way to do it - before talking to Gaffer to (supposedly) end the quest, make sure that no random spawns are around and the area is clear. Make a save, talk to Gaffer, collect the reward. Travel east, get the message, return and start the final defense part. If everything worked correctly you'll notice the enemy spawns marching towards you and not standing still. Defend the town and finish the quest.

I did the whole quest again following your advise, unfortunately the quest still does not get marked as completed even when i kept all of the squad alive. Hamster is missing, and Ricochet is dead, both when i pay him and they are in the townhall, or when i ignore that part and they are still in the cellar. How did you resolve the Hamster questpart?

I've payed Ricochet. Unfortunately he drops dead as soon as the final defense wave is triggered.
In general, I think that something is preventing the Monolith soldiers script from attacking the town as intended in the quest. Perhaps it's because of some additional spawns in the area? I've had an idea about triggering an emission to clear the area before talking to Gaffer and triggering the final part of the quest.

I am having the exact same problem bro, after fighting off the second monolith attack gaffer says that we succeeded in defeating them and to come and talk inside. when i get near the main hall hamster disappears and ricochet gets killed. I checked the journal and 1 weird thing that i noticed it the fact that the optional objective to kill monolith scouts(ones on the hill) shows up as failed, even tough i have previously completed it., this quest seems like it has been almost fixed except for the end part. I can give you screenshots and savefiles if you need, just dm me or something, idk. I am playing on 1.1.3 steam version, nom ods. rtx 4070 ti super, i5-10600, 2x16gb DDR4 RAM, the game is installed on a 500gb m2 ssd. Please help me, this bug is driving me crazy and it might be what makes me quit the game ...

The first time I did the mission, Gaffer called us back but he tells me it all failed, but the mission is ticked off. So I redo it and now I am in the same boat as the poster.

I defend the town, he calls us back telling us we won, but the mission does not tick off.

Other than that it all looks like the mission is done and there happy, they all stay in the building.

Man I knew about these bugs so I played other games but it all seems for nothing ;/

I finally got my mission completed announce by running stupid far away from the town.

I was able to finish the quest by now by running far away after the victory speech, but Hamster is still missing. Are you sure Hamster survived in your attempt like you wrote in your original Post? For me Hamster vanishes the instant the last wave is killed, Ricochet dies in the same moment.
