Update takes 3 hours??
Constant high disk usage while downloading. This is kind of ridiculous. Is this normal?

yes this is normal if you look at the downloads page in steam you will see that steam is patching your game concurrently with the download. I downloaded and installed the update with a 100mbps internet connection in 10 mins.

My download is 15MB/s and it still takes 3 hours. It's like it's downloading the entire game. This is way too much.

Just took me 7 mins from start to finish.

I am trying to explain this in every topic...
Patching game causes a lot of disk writes. If your SSD is small size, or it has low free space left, or it runs out of fast write cache - your patching process can get very slow

took me like 5 minutes to update. If it's taking you 3 hours to unpack, it's time to upgrade your CPU and get some SSD's

This is not a CPU problem. Any 10 y.o. CPU can handle this task

Got a new pretty expensive computer so there shouldn't be any issues with my SSD or CPU whatsoever. Game runs flawlessly on nearly highest settings (lowered the settings just to quiet those fans a bit lmao).

Get you a Samsung 990 pro or a Seagate FireCuda 540 m.2 drive nvme

Mine is 7.6gb and took me about 15mins to download and install. Some of you guys must have crap internet and computers if it takes as long as you say, or you overstating how long it actually takes.

tell me you have no idea what you're talking about without telling me you have no idea what you're talking about. OP probably has a 10 yo CPU and is why it took 3 hours to patch the game (a CPU intensive task)

Check your SSD free space, if its less than 200GB you might be better off uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

UE makes a copy of the game, patches that, and than replaces your original install with the patched game, if your short on space on your SSD that wil take for ever.

My PC at home has plenty of space on the SSD and it take a few minutes, the one at my moms place has 160GB free space and it take a really long time to patch it, way faster to uninstall and reinstall the game there.

Oh, and if you do not have a SSD but a HDD, than your screwed, gonna take for ever to patch it.

i literally explained 2 posts above, it is SSD problem not CPU problem
if you think CPU can bottleneck SSD writes you have 0% of understanding how computer works on hardware level
