Prypyat can still be accessed via a crate move, wooden box, as of Patch 1.1.3. At the level of the sniper in the Jupiter zone.
To the right of the train station in Yaniw there are railway carriages at the end.
Patch 1.1.4 Prypyat can be traveled further.
South Duga has always been freely accessible, 1 side quest and 2 artifacts can be collected. The northern military area can only be accessed with the main story.
I played 1st Stalker and was raging on that sniper, but now after playing on Ward side I can totally understand this place.
Also makes sense from "rl perspective" also, just saw some delta force memoirs where they were pinned down by 1 sniper for 12(or even 20h). And that was best of the best fighting good position...
It doesnt fit the arcadeish bum rush style, but those moments where u have been reminded that Zone isntough place are also good imo..
