Is the I7 9700K such a bad CPU?!
I7 9700K with a 4070
I get 40fps in the first village @1080p on medium, frametimes all over the place, CPU at 80-90% GPU at 60%.
I play all other games atleast @1440 with high/ultra settings.

I cant on my end only.

I7-9700K is not in recomend setting..... its a way worst than Ryzne 7 5800x. So yes you probably have good FPS on this procesor... Try run Frame generation
I fear this processor is what is holding me back as well. I have a 4070 ti super with 32 gb ram and an i7 9700K and the game is almost unplayable for me with most everything set to medium/low on 1440p with frame gen on.

For whatever reason intel removed hyper threading from the 9700k and i am convinced thats why i just cant get this game to run while others with much worse hardware are claiming otherwise.

FSR3 + reflex = 2x FPS and 7x the smoothness.

This game hammers any CPU you throw at it. Even my 7800X3D gets smacked across its face, dropping below 60 fps in populated areas, like Zalissya or Rostok. It's just what Unreal Engine 5 does, as it's an unoptimized piece of code.

Ive had this suggested to me by many but it just doesnt work. Reflex makes the input lag a little better but it still feels like im moving through syrup when trying to aim or move in a firefight.

You will have to research settings and possibly use a performance mod. The 7700k is the minimum processor, while the 11700 is the recommended. The 9700k performs about 10% better than the 7700k and the 11700 only performs about 2-3% better than the 9700k.

You should be getting reasonable results with that CPU.

Ye, the thing about input lag is that lower your FPS is, the more input lag you get from FSR3, if you play at around 90 or 100 its almost no input lag. According to some streamers.

If i could play it at 90 or 100 fps i wouldn't need frame gen….

Im talking 90ish with FSR3.... thats about 50-60 without FSR3

Hate to be like this lol but if i could play at 50-60 fps i still wouldnt need frame gen.

Same, i dont need more then 60 in a singleplayer game, but many need 100.

Why dont you play at 1440p and put some pressure to your gpu instead the cpu?
Use fsr/dlss and framegen. Did you load the latest nvidia driver?
Also the first village is a known performance nightmare.

Im playing at 1440p with a 3080 and a 9700k too on high/mixed settings. Having good fps and frametimes, particularly since latest driver. Sometimes it stutters yes, but it was and could be way worse.
And still i hope till MHW the 9800x3d has better availability.

It's not a bad processor, it's actually a pretty good one, but unfortunately the game was made using the UE5 engine, which according to a friend of mine is a terrible choice since the engine appears to be unstable and very demanding, and if you combine that with a huge open world, plenty of entities and object, interactions, models, animations, calculations of the positions of the light and shadows, etc.... You get a bad performance due to the amount of calculations that are needed, even on high end PCs. To me the problem comes down to bad game design and terrible development that didn't keep in mind all the factors mentioned above. Also some of these issues can also be caused by a memory leak, which would be a coding problem.

you need to turn on FSR3 Framgen OP so many players are missing out on this setting to double the framerate, I have it on on a Ryzen 7 2700x and RTX 3070 and get 80fps at max detail, DLSS set to DLAA at 1080p

also set Cuda Sysmem Fallout Policy to Off in Nvidia control panel this will fix a massive framerate drop the game has in certain locations

Yep, 9700k is very outdated CPU. Specially with a 4070 video card. You can put everything on Epic and frames would probably be the same since CPU is bottlenecking the whole system. Hope you have at least 32gb too, because 16GB is bottlenecking this game too.

Anyway, turn DLSS Frame generation on. Not the ideal, but at least you will have a smooth visual.

My recommended setting for you:

DLAA instead DLSS since you have a good video card, so you will have better graphics without any hit on performance + High + DLSS FG. I have a 4070 too and DLAA have the very same performance than DLSS but obviously a much better visual

Don't forget to turn off sync in NVIDIA driver if you have turn it on any time. It will give you HUGE input lag with FG turned on
