I guess at one point he was brainwashed by Scar about the Shine and the Light zone things (you can see it in Wards and Scar's route in Foundation, he's talking about these things, and in Strelok's route he was mad about it is not being the truth). Probably Scar shown him the dead father in Visiograph, how Scar did it with Ozersky, shown him a dead Topol.
