try this if your game is unreasonably dark
i just booted up my game and noticed it was unreasonably dark and upon checking my gpu adapter in the settings it was set to something called "long long long long value name" and upon changing it back to my real gpu and restarting the game everything was looking fine

You can also move the gamma slider around. I thought the gamma slider was supposed to go until the left side icon was barely visible.
I would see NOTHING in tunnels or during the night, so I was wrong :D

The HDR is broken, eye adaptation is meant for SDR and is still present in HDR.
HDR also has raised black issue, the image can never be truly black, you can fix it with a reshade addon : https://github.com/clshortfuse/renodx/wiki/Mods
If you wanna help GSC solve the issue, make a support ticket and tell them about the raised black issue and eye adaptation negatively affecting HDR. i made a thread about HDR, feel free to read it too.(search "hdr" in the game's forum)

i kinda like the darkness underground myself.
the problem i have with the lighting is the transition between inside and outside, peeking a door is completely useless 90% of the time because of all the artificial bloom. it just makes it a white mist on the way out of a cave or doorway during the day and you cant see anything until you step through exposing yourself to what ever is there

Game uses 2.056 gamma to compensate the broken lighting and eye adaptation.
It's supposed to be 2.2(50% but the slider is broken, can't get exactly 2.2 without changing config file) like any normal game but GSC made 2.056 the new default else it looks darker than intended even in daylight.

as much as i wanna say the hdr is broken it makes the game look so much nicer and actually makes the flashlight useful lmao

the dark spots looks very nice with HDR on i agree but sometimes i load into my game and am outside during daytime and it feels like it would be like sunset in game even though its like mid day

This is sadly still true. Hdr black level is raised to like 0.002215 for some reason while sdr is 0.0 min nits

i just wish we had nvg's like in the og games, or heck not a freaking ww2 flashlight.
50/50/48
Check your nvidia control panel and monitor's settings/presets. Game is what it supposed to be.

Wrong, the pc version has some form of bug or glitch raising the black level that doesn't appear in the console versions.
Use Nvidia RTX Dynamic Vibrance

GSC's support told me the problem is fixed.
But when testing without renodx addon It didn't look like it at least for this version so maybe they got confused and it's gonna be fixed in the next version? i hope so at least
In the meanwhile the only fix is the renodx reshade addon, afterwards the game's graphics become so much better, colors are more lifelike with the tonemapping and without the raised black, and the contrast differences shine with weather effects and anomalies.

50 / 50 / 65 gamma which is 2.55 real gamma which is natural light day
Game uses a nonstandard gamma value on purpose because of the aggressive eye adaptation(lowering gamma lessens the effect of eye adaptation, at least that's the goal).
The technically correct setting is 2.2(50%, set it through the configuration file because the slider is broken) with adjustment from your monitor/TV if desired.
The other values(Brightness/Contrast) can cause artifacts such as black crush/raised black if they're not at their default values so use carefully.

I have to darken the room to play this game even with gamma edits, any glare and it's hard to see at night. Long as it's dark-ish in here it's great.

I don't mind the light adjustment in theory, it's just too fast so it's really noticeable. More subtle or just a slower transition might be better.
