Is weapon degredation making a return?
So I very much enjoyed the original STALKER games well before the modern stalker craze took off, and I like the sim-lke nature of needing to keep weapons repaired to stay effective.

Having been out of the loop for this game for a while, I wanted to ask if this aspect is making a return?

Also let me preface I'm talking about the original very simple weapon degradation system, not the convoluted mess that things like GAMMA and other realism mods have.

That's correct. Weapons will degrade in S2. Oh, and don't think that you can make money on broken guns :)

Is there any point in carrying broken weapons with you? In the previous parts, they were pointless (repairs are expensive, and selling them after repair isn't profitable). Therefore, there was absolutely no reason to keep broken guns. The idea in the SGM mod was good; you could disassemble weapons and equipment for parts

When I played S2, there was no point in carrying broken weapons with you. It is mostly impossible to use without it jamming, and the cost of repairs... Better not even try. Maybe only some unique ones and very rare you can try to save this way worth your attention.

Weapon degradation has been present in all the original games so far, it's safe to assume that it will be in Stalker 2 as well. Besides, we've already seen in gameplay footage that guns in the inventory apparently have a condition indicator, plus reliability is mentioned in some guns description.

Sweet! I tried to skim through some recent gameplay but could not find any indicators of weapon condition so I wanted to ask.

This is one of the few AAA games in a while I'm trying to go in completely blind, but I at least wanted to know how close to the original this was going to be.

As long as their are still survival horror elements of scrounging for ammo, fighting scary mutants, moving through dark dank underground bases, and the unique "a-life" system that really makes the world feel alive, this game will be a slam dunk for me.

I've heard from an early reviewer that there is weapon degradation, but not to what degree.

Haven't read anything about that from the devs, tho.

I mean the original 3 games had very basic weapon degradation and I would be completely fine with that being in this game. Its just adds to the atmosphere that you are in an apocalyptic zone, and weapons/gear will not be in perfect condition when you find it unless you yourself fix it up.

I also hope there is a survival mode similar to Metro Exodus where ammo is more scarce and things of that nature to really add more the the atmosphere ;)

The old Inside Gaming/Funhouse guys talked specifically about Weapon Degradation being present when they talked about Stalker 2 recently. That it wasn't awfully overbearing but it did require them to repair their weapons when they would return to hubs. I believe Lawrence specifically linked it towards pushing the player towards one or two favorite weapons to both upgrade and maintain them to keep a focus on what they want to use.

If so it doesn't sound any different than CoP, basically. It's probably the same elements there, since the brief upgrade screen we saw looked very reminiscent of CoP.

Sounds exactly want I loved in the past games. Finding that favorite weapon and slowly maintaining and growing an attachment to it. Very good to here this is still a core of the Stalker experience.

This sounds like the exact type of sequal I would want from the original Stalker games. Thanks for pointing me to this article, its a great read!

Thanks for confirmation. By the way, are you allowed to tell us if we will be able to repair guns ourselves "on the field", besides paying traders for repairs?

The real question is will there be guns that are cheap enough to repair to make a profit from selling them afterwards. In Call of Pripyat weapons could be sold as long as they had lost no more than two lights of the durability bar. Repairing guns to sell them wasn't a thing in CoP but one gun out of four or so had enough durability left to sell it. However it was nothing compared to how much money you could make with Beard's artifact deliveries.

I am sure stalker 2 will have simple and straightforward durability system, just like the original games.

your weapon won't break after few shots, but for a long mission you want to make sure it is fully maintained.

i liked fallout 3 and new vegas system (also similar to minecraft lol) where you can make a fully repaired gun out of two half damaged ones. yes, it is very game-ish, but quite good way to utilize otherwise broken useless junk

I sure hope so, and that the degradation effect isn't overdone.

Otherwise, there would be little point in upgrading our favourite irons.
