The AKS-74U equivalent can work well into the midgame if you hit headshots and keep AP ammo handy, but it will of course suffer a bit. It's classed as more of an SMG than an assault rifle. The game isn't based on realistic combat balancing, and it shouldn't need to be either. If you only find realism fun, go ahead and mod your game to ruin the combat balancing. That's your choice. This game has stable aim if you use a sniper, or stop moving/running around, though it still favours a run and gun lpaystyle if you're not just tapping heads with a scope.
The AKS-74 equivalent can also work well into the midgame, I'd even say towards the beginning of the endgame, again if you land headshots and keep your AP ammo handy. It IS an assault rifle type weapon, and can in fact mount a decent scope that lets you trivialize most human enemies.
The point of the balancing, like EVERY SINGLE PRIOR STALKER, is that you pick up new weapons of higher tiers to deal with higher tier enemies. You CAN run around with an AKS and land AP headhots on everything, but doing so makes the game much harder.
BUT they don't ever take into account people might not wanna mod their game, for any reason, when they reply.
On a side note: I love this gun. It's probably my favorite starting pistol from any game. It just feels good to use, and it sounds awesome. Got a nice little extended magazine mod in it.

It just makes finding new ones feel like you collect junk to sell, not something fun to shoot.
