Key for Northern Checkpoint

Hi,

I finished all missions in the Lesser Zone and I am ready to move to the next zone.
Therefor I need to go to the Northers checkpoint. But the door is locked and I don't have a key.
I searched for info and it seems Gaffer will give me the key after completing the mission " A Race Against Death". This mission is marked as completed although I have a grey icon in front of the objective "Get to the shelter".
Does this mean I failed the mission (because of the grey icon and not a green marker) of did I succeed the mission (since it is marked as complete).
Anyway, I talked to Gaffer and he doesn't give me the key...
I took a long way around over the Pontoon Bridge in the west, to go all the way around to the other side of the Northern checkpoint, but this can not be the purpose.
Any help please?

If you sided with the ward, you're supposed to leave using the west checkpoint. It's only the northern one if you sided with the stalkers. However, if you sided with the stalkers, and your mission is to go north, and it still isn't unlocked, you may have to get uetools from the nexus and use f10 to open the console, then uetools_ghost and uetools_walk to get through. A lot of doors in the game are locked when they shouldn't be and a lot of them still haven't been fixed.

ward is east is not west, I remember a stalker saying that the ward opened eastern side on a radio message

Yeah Gaffer is supposed to give you the key. You just need to talk to him.
Normally once you finish a specific mission there is an emission and you have to take shelter in a bunker inside the town, that's where most people recover the key.

The wards are the ones opening up all sides, they're keeping the lesser zone in lockdown, then when you side with one side or the other, the wards lead you west (I should know, that's what I did) and the stalkers lead you north.

It isn't, the wards have opened up all sides, and that specific call is from two people who are excited about the east specifically being open.

While the ward task takes you west and the stalker task takes you north, I believe this radio message is a hint for older fans that they can now go visit the Cordon to the East if they'd like, which is what I instantly did when I heard the message.

yea ;) btw the perimeter decomaniation center in lessor zone is open too if you want to get to sid faster don't have to go from the north end all the time to get to cordon

Thanks for the info. I'm not sided with any faction until now, but it seems a good idea to go with the ward since I understand they open all sides.
