As soon as you can leave the Lesser Zone you can walk everywhere. (even to Prypiat if you cheese a bit - it's normally only accessible late into the main story)
In both cases, though, you need to cross a guarded military checkpoint, so you must either be very sneaky (and lucky), or be geared up enough to deal with a squad of hostile soldiers.
If you make it, though, then the Cordon is pretty chill. Aside from the occasional bandits spawning directly in your pants, there are very few threats roaming around, unless you go deliberately looking for them.
