How do I inventory manage in this game?
I feel like I'm always either overburdened or understocked. If I carry enough ammo to deal with an ambush I can't carry anything else, if I only carry 2-3 mags for my AK I am guaranteed to run into a bloodsucker. I feel like there is some trick that I am missing.
Do later armors or artifacts add carrying capacity or make armor lighter or something?

First rule: choose a gun whose ammo is common among NPCs in the place you're going. Resupply by looting.

Can you share a picture of your inventory?

idk but on controller it feels horrible. they should Give us a cursor or some better shortcuts.

This is what I use and I have no inventory probs:

-Valik Lummox's AKM-74S with 130-150 rounds (AP rounds if you can find/afford them)
-SPSA-14 with 30-40 AP rounds
-Skif's pistol with 30-40 AP rounds

Those ammo numbers are important. If you are constantly looting, you should still have ammo left over by the time you get to a trader. When you find stronger guns and the ammo for them becomes plenty/affordable, then replace the old ones.

I got lucky and found a PSZ-5D armor (Duty armor) and upgraded it and have 4 artifact slots on it. You wanna go get the weird water artifact at Zaton because it increases your carry weight. I can carry up to 120 kilos.

Lots of Armor (not all) can be upraded to carry 10% more weight. This helps more then you might think. You also often have upgrades that reduce the weight of the weapon or armor.

Arthefact sides regenerade over time. Green/gas ones have artifacts, that reduce radiation. That will allow you to use other ones, such as weight artifacts that can also give you more carrying capacity. These you can find in the crushing/wind etc. anomaly fields (for example the sphere in the starting region)

Edit1: Water has better ones i think, but it is randome.

Edit2: Don't fight mutants if possible. They give you nothing. If you have to try to use some kind of shotgun. Pre update if was like 6 shells for a bloodsucker. It should be less now.

Well, I am tell you what I carry around on the regular and maybe that can help?

generally my AR is on single shot always, I carry around 200-250 bullets for it(main gun for outside or ranged shots), shotgun (clip type = 200 shells, manual reload type = 100), Pistol (single fire = 100 bullets, Burst fire = 150-200 bullets). Both pistol and shotgun are my indoor/close quarters weapons, pistol i use silencer. If i need sneak, or no sneak I use accordingly.

Havent really used sniper or sub machine guns in my first run, so not sure how much of those types of ammo I would recommend.

Medical/Food == exploration = 5 medkit + 10 bandage, 5 bread + 2 sausage, 5 energy drinks. Mission = 10 medkit + 10 bandage, 10 bread + 5 Sausage, 10 energy drinks.

I have always had radio resist artifacts on so I never needed to really deal with rads, but I would bring 2 full rad meds if needed. I generally dont carry any of the bottles(minus the artifact one) on me ever.

This is what I tote around with many hours in, I got all the legendary random spawn anomaly artifacts on, and an urchin(swap for bottle when needed, for carry weight or super rads).

so I have this problem

I leave the base to execute missions with an empty bag

i then encounter random areas and enemies, I then generate yellow marked guns and other loot

I then get encumbered with weight, cannot move, or move very slow, stamina depletes way too fast

only way to move fast is drop the loot

ive got a hoarding habit

need the cash

damn only if they had fast travel, or some sort of buggy to drive around in

2 healthkits/bandages. 3 cans of food. 40 shells. 120 rifle/smg bullets. (Only use sinfle shot) 30 pistol bullets.

When you get back to your chest dump all ammo. Sell excess amounts of anything else you pick up.

In most if not all major settlements there's a player stash box. It's mostly by the sleeping area. The Slag heap one is by the trader. Your gear appears where ever you open the box. So put some thing in in the starting town then go to the Slag Heap all your stuff appears there.

Outfits can be upgraded.

Weapons weight can be reduced.

There's artifacts.

Use single shot vs full auto.

Mutants are a waste of ammo. Shotguns work better for mutants.

Aim for the head and use the right ammo type. There's more than one ammo type. Can also upgrade weapons.

Not right now, I'm still downloading the patch. Slow-as-butt german internet :(

I will look out for that. I had a hunch that you're supposed to find carry weight artifacts later.

So that's a buff of 8 kilograms? That's a buttload of ammo. I didn't know artifact sites spawn new artifacts over time, thought it's a one-and-done. And they actually nerfed the bloodsuckers? Thank the lord.

Thanks for all of your tips everyone. I already feel way more confident in tackling the game now! Well... tomorrow.

Here's a tip for everybody if you're encumbered and you can't move use bodies as a storage if you put everything in it And pick it up you can still move at a walking pace

Ok, well, if you share it, me or somebody can tell you exactly what it should look like when you venture outside.

I stock up around 100 pistol ammo for Skif's pistol, surprisingly good when hitting headshots even on Veteran, then 100 ammo for VAL and around 100 for a shotgun to deal with mutants. About 12 medkits and 12 bandages, with decent armor I'm already at 40 kg, three artifacts = 100 max carry capacity.

There isn't an easy way to do it. I love the Series but i've always hated how easily over encumbered you get. I'm a loot goblin and it hurts my soul especially with how the economy in this game is.

10 medkits
10 bandages
armour/helmet
one weapon in each slot
Detector
a few energy drinks, anti rad, 4/5 food.

Try to use ammo that is light or common like AK ammo.

Don't pick up broken guns, there are a few artifacts you can find but i'm not 100% sure which type of anomaly they come from to help weight.
