Chemical plant armory door code

I'm so frustrated, everywhere I look online guides keep telling me what the code is, but what I want to know is HOW you're supposed to figure the code out. Is it available somewhere nearby? Did all those guides randomly guess? When I was there I couldn't figure it out and left, then never came back and finished the game. Where was the code supposed to be?
