132GB Patch???
Can someone explain to me why I'm having to re-download the entire 132 GB's for a patch? This seems beyond ridiculous.

You're not, you downloaded 13gb and those 13gb have to update 132gb worth of pak files

Thats how updating PC games work

It's 13,68 GB.

You'd probably recognize if you clicked that update button. It is 13gb and it took only a few minutes to complete.

I was going to say "In B4 a bunch of troglodytes try to argue that its not reinstalling the game its just writing to the install even though for a lot of people its taking the same amount of time to install the patch as it did the game so it doesnt matter what they call it"

but i was too late :(

Steam has distinct measurements for writing vs downloading though, so why does it say it's 132GB for both if it's just downloading a 13 GB patch, not downloading a 132GB one? Seems inherently stupid to format it that way.

EDIT: Got mixed up, it says it's a 123GB patch, 132GB is the full game size.

What's the size of your install folder? Mine got emptied out and the game is redownloading itself now.

Also, have your download started through the update queue or you've pushed the UPDATE button that replaced the play button?

At this point I'm not sure if people genuinely do not know how patching a PC game works or if this is just people being bored while their game is patching, I'ma just say both and ignore em all from now on

Through the queue. Never had this happen before though.

This is a combination of how steam does updates as well as UE .pak files...

The actually updates themselves are usually fairly tiny compared to the "updating process."
For instance an update might be 1 GB but the patching is closer to 80GB.

So a couple of things to note.

1. When it comes to patching (NOT downloading) your Hard drive or SSD is one of the main components on how fast the update completes. a HDD or a slow SSD will result in MUCH longer update time then a fast SSD. Your CPU also plays a part in the speed of the patching. Your internet speed, has NOTHING to do with the patching process, only the download process.

2. The reason it works the way it does is because UE uses files called .pak files. These are basically archives of every file required to make a game work.

On the developers end, we have .pak files.:
If the developers do not break these .pak files into smaller bitesize pieces (10 GB instead of 80GB) what ends up happening is the ENTIRE 80GB .pak file has to unpack and a small portion of those files need to be updated, then the file gets packed up into a .pak file again.

Unfortunately for us, the VAST majority of developers (AAA or otherwise) use MASSIVE .pak files instead of smaller bite sized .pak files.

On steams side we have the download and patching system:
  • It first has to download all the new files for the patch
  • Then it has to extract the .pak file which basically means you will have the original .pak file and the extracted files all on the same drive (which effectively duplicates the space needed)
  • Finally it has to repack the .pak file and then delete the extra data
  • Both the unpacking and packing of the .pak file are impacted by CPU speed and SSD/HDD speed, not internet speed.

This is a very basic explanation of what is happening on the back end, but it should suffice for the people that are wondering...
