Bullet caliber differences
Hello,
Can someone explain to me the differences in calibers, for example 545x39 and 556x45 in the game? (not irl). Kharod can be modified to change from 556 to 554 - but what's the point? (or maybe it's another bug in the description).
Thank you.

damage/range. some calibers fired will also degrade your weapon faster at the cost of higher damage or further range

As far as caliber goes you can just look on the weapons how high the damage and penetration is. Various weapons will have different stats so you need to look.
Bullets however you have FMJ, AP, HP and SS which is Full metal jacket, Armor piercing, Hollow Point and Subsonic.

FMJ your basic ammo deals regular damage to all foes without armor, AP penetrates armor and deals more damage, HP deals even more damage to unarmored foes and SS i haven't really tried yet as i haven't seen any need to. There's a mod on nexus that makes all these visible on all ammo boxes so it's easier to differ what they are.

Thnx for info ,

In the main post I meant regular bullets. So I understand that there is no difference between the caliber I mentioned above if it is a standard bullet and the only thing I should be guided by is the weapon's statistics?

The weapon stats is the major thing you should look at like the damage and penetration, and for the bullet types when you face heavily armored foes you might want to use AP rounds, and while facing monsters and non-armored you want to use HP for the most damage. Other than that, you can use any bullet you want and shot a few more than needed, doesn't really matter in the end since that's up to you if you like firing more rounds or not.

The only difference in Stalker 2 for different caliber ammo are how common or costly it is to acquire it. Just for OP's interest: 5.45x39mm is standar Soviet/Russian caliber for their assault rifles. 5.56x45mm is NATO caliber for same type of rifles.

While Stalker game pretend to be on a realistic side of shooters, their approach to gun ballistics is very simplistic and in certain aspects completely wrong. There is no reason that two weapons using same cartridge/ammo would do drastically different amount of damage to enemies. There might be some differences depending on barrel length, bullet grain and few other factors, however, same bullet will do approximately same amount of damage if shot at same target at same distance from two different guns. This is where the Stalker franchise simplifies the model. It is very likely we will eventually see complete weapon overhaul mods that will bring more realistic gun mechanics but it will take time.

What is the effect on the Kharod?

makes zero sense as to why ap/hp rounds wear and tear your gun down faster... for the sake of adding a lazy mechanic? That does not happen in RL, I understand they are just trying to make elements of the game but ffs I hate that.

You need to clean your gun more ofter while firing ap rounds in RL

Either you're not doing a whole lot of shooting or your maintenance routine scares me.
