Monolith
Its been a while since I played the original Shadow of Chernobyl but I dont remember the Monoliths being that bad in the first game. I think I was able to avoid them for the most part. Where they worse than I thought? I didnt play the sequel games so maybe they were worse there?

They were only mostly centered north around the power plant or the area immediately below (radar or something, don't remember the name). Some would show up nearby where Freedom resided but they were contained.

Do you mean bad as in story, or as in gameplay?

In story they are the C-Conciousness's warriors. Those who try to pass the brain-scorcher are either zombified or brainwashed and inducted into the Monolith. You get to see a bit of this at the end of the Clear Sky ending where several stalkers are seen being brainwashed via TV screens. They worship and are devoted towards the "Monolith", and after the events of SoC the C-Concious is destroyed and the Monolith falls silent. In CoP some of the Monolith still fight you, but you can find a friendly squad and these guys later go to form the Noontiders.

In gameplay they had some of the best gear, it would make sense too as a lot of the stalkers likely to attempt to pass the brain scorcher would be the most veteran with the best equipment

Yeah I meant story wise. How ethical were they really? I remember they brainwashed stalkers but only those who attacked the thing. But They left people alone for the most part I thought

They weren't good or evil, they were just brainwashed and set to protect the power plant. They mostly stayed in their place but would sometimes try to break through Freedom territory. They would sometimes send brainwashed operatives hidden amongst STALKERS to kill specific targets, like Strelok.
