Also, they need to suck blood at some point.
TBH they are fairly easy once you get it how to fight them - even when they are in bigger numbers.
I use those things:
use your surroundings to limit their options of attacking you and strike first, they get discouraged easily before they attack and may disengage.

Skill issue, they're easily trackable most of the time. Although now that they don't do their distinct panting and sniffling as they used to, it's harder to track them by ear.

Gear issue. Find a good shotgun, and 5-6 bullets will be enough, at least on medium difficulty

Not true. Been playing what, some 18 hours or so, encountered only 5 of them, and one of the encounters was a pair of them, and 2 encounters were scripted spawns.
They're a thorn in a side, perhaps, but a managable one, nothing impossible.
