Use thermal paste on CPU instead of eating it

Does sound like a heating problem, could also be a RAM issue and there's a patch incoming this week that might fix

are you undervolting overclocking the GPU? if so tone it down

The best overclock you'll ever do is buy an Nvidia GPU
Facts. and the memory overclock on nvidia GPU's are insane.. thanks MSI afterburner.. I've held an overclock for 6 years straight on a GTX 1070 from Zotac, and it's able to have a stable +90 OC on core clock and +690 Mhz on the VRAM, COD MW2 - the 2022 one, made me need to downclock my Core overclock by 30Hz, otherwise the game had grey/black clouds wherever my crosshair was.
but i can't speak for the latest, but I plan to go RTX 3070, or 3060ti next; ;? can't really decide.. I think a 10GB 3080 just in case i want to play 2560x1920 or something crazier than this 1080p life;

Nvidia studio drivers are also better & more stable than game ready drivers.

OP _ I think your power supply needs a renewal. Perhaps a replacement. if the volt fixes continue to do this to you. This game is far more demanding than everything before it. For the first time ever post-BG3 - my GPU with 3 fans has passed 65^C at 42% constant fan speed, I can keep it under 60 with a 60% fan constant,
Test a different PSU in your machine if you can; see if the same issue presents itself, then you know it's the voltage the PC is not agreeing with, but if you don't get this on the tester, consider the previous PSU past it's lifetime...

Actually had this happen once although it never did it again. Likely just the game itself because never once I had this issue with any other game with my current rig.

I'd suggest just looking into your temps, you aren't going to get valid feedback online as everyone's system is different and is mostly best self-diagnosed as you'll just get false claims of what's wrong with your PC from strangers.
