Ok yeah, makes sense.
I've seen "locked with yellow icon" and just "locked w/o icon". what gives?
As said, most locked door will unlock only from inside and not outside or if its quest related.
So you need to find an other way in. From roof, tunnel, parkour etc etc.
That locked door in most case is actually an exit point and not an entrance if that make sense. :p
As there would be no way to get out or its a fast route to get out so you don't have to backtrack.
The game just want you to find an other entrance to get on the other side of that locked door you are looking at in most case. ;)
If there is said key/quest. There will be a keypad for either keycard or keycode you need to enter next to the door to unlock it.
If there is a padlocks, shoot it. it will break and door will open.
As for yellow icon with or without on locked door. I seriously haven't noticed that.
So far, all the locked door I encountered ( about 15 or so) was actually an exit door like mentioned above by taking an other path to get inside ;)
Only 1 I wasn't able to get inside. And its in the lesser zone north of the 1st town. There is a river you can't cross and the only way in would be the little gated building. Nothing close so I could jump on roof or by the ground. Either its "quest locked" or I haven't tried hard enough. But since I'm no longer in that zone and quite far. Well, that will be for an other time.
Look around, be observant. Chances are, you missed a generator, a switch, or a padlock that can be shot off. The only exception is stuff locked behind plot-gates.
I remember a spot where I ended up climbing up one way to the roof, so I could then drop down onto a shelf, which was in the proper position to finally climb up into the attic where I need to get. All in an area of popper anomalies so if you set a foot on the ground, you would get a searing blinding flashbang to the face. Woot.
Qft, a good and old key.
Some boarded up from the other side, but you can shoot them. Look for open windows or openings near the doors, and yellow paint.
Others are bugged.
YMMV
