Not all the anomalies have artifacts in it.
Squint is a hot-headed, fully self-entitled and self-absorbed scumbag. He made this crystal clear from the start. It's like he wanted to shot his own foot! A warning would have greatly increased your odds for success, to his benefit.
I mean, after such an ordeal, any man would owe it to himself to confront Squint on this matter. Sure, you could run, rather than shoot him. You might even find a way to save his sorry life, despite his own stupidity. But admit it, you'd be naieve to even try. It will only blow up in your face. Squint is too used to dealing in death treats--same as his friend. He won't understand the friendly tone behind your words....
Yeah, don't buy into that guilt trip either--that death threat letter, should one surface. His blood won't on your hands. You were doing him a favor, and for what?
Shoot him. It worked for me; it'll work for you. Then learn from it. Don't be so desperate next time to trust just anyone. Just know in hindsight that Squint's end was overdue. You may alter history by stepping in, but somehow his death will still be pinned on you. You knew that, the moment you accepted the job to find him.
Hey, this actually kinda of points the finger at the Gaffer, don't you think? He knew what kind of man Squint was, better than you could. And yet, he put you up to this. You were probably fooled by the Gaffer's charisma, but I wasn't. I don't know whether you wanted to be, but as for myself, I didn't really care. I mean, it is inevitable that Squint will have to die, whether it be wardens, wild pigs, or the Zone's own karma. Putting it that way, you were practically itching to be the scape goat.
Do you see now, how desperation and the quick fix just makes things worse? I sure wish I had stopped myself from the beginning. But then, meanwhile, back to my present, I didn't leave things to chance, and now I won't have to return to finish him off for you.
This one is on you. Shoot Squint. Get the sensor codes. You won't get "the artifact" (you didn't find one)...but you'll soon find better. Don't feel remorse over fate, not even for your own sake. You didn't die, you were just trying to do Squint a favor, you still have all six fingers. Squint got much less than he deserved. He was fully aware of the consequences for his own actions--against both you and the ward. Him putting his hopes in you seems like justice to me. You earned your salvation by surviving your trip to the den of death and back.
You really got into that response didn't you? :p
