The defaults seem to be pretty accurate and the best settings to tweak are Brightness (in standard and HDR settings)
But based on what you said, if it is washed out that could mean that it isn't activating properly.
I have Auto HDR off in Windows and no problems in game. Also have it turned off permanently because RTX HDR works much better with everything that doesn't natively support it.
One thing that I've noticed though is that if you are in the settings menu it doesn't look like its using HDR as the whites have a different tint to it, but in game everything seems fine.
I also don't have the best/True HDR monitor (Dell G2724D)
Maybe try doing a reset of all the display settings and then starting from scratch. Could be a bug causing things not to apply correctly.
Idk, because for me in game native HDR works perfectly. To follow above comment, I have auto HDR off in windows 11 as well, only leaving HDR on and ran windows HDR calibration tool to report 1000 nits .
My auto HDR is on, and my monitor is calibrated to 75% contrast.
Also, it appears that the gamma setting when in HDR mode only effects hud gamma.
Finally I have settings that I'm happy with in both light and dark scenes. So, for what it's worth, my PC in-game HDR settings recommendation is...
Contrast 75 (default)
Brightness 48
Gamma 41 (personal pref)
Black point -4 (default)
White point (display's peak capability)
HDR Brightness 20
I wouldn't recommend touching Black point or contrast. Hope this helps someone 😊
