Are anomalies a real thing?

The HBO series fallows the FIRST explosion at chernobyl. The 2nd explosion (which occurs only within the games) is what brings the anomolies.

It's not super common to run into Anomalies in real life and is best not too cause them either.

No, at least they are not this extreme. However, i did hear reports of ball lightnings that are extremely deadly but also extremely rare, though due to the extreme scarcity people still cannot decide if they are real or just urban legends.
