Same with the telekinetic sphere (Poltergeist?) in that ship wreck a few steps further.
The game tells us to be smart here, I guess.
As many have said elsewhere already, do not try to engage / kill everything. It will be helpful to evade and play it safe, as that will help to build up your material resources and not degrade your weapons so fast, etc.
Plus with Mutants, it's not like there is anything to loot off of them.
You also are going to come across many 3rd party engagements between two groups and such. Sometimes it's best to just let that play out without you jumping into the middle of it.
It's one thing when it's an actual mission to help someone; otherwise best to avoid some hairy situations, at least earlier in the game when your gear sux.
