Any tips on killing that first poltergeist?

Yo. Spoilers ahead.

Playing veteran difficulty.

That prologue Boat has a poltergeist in it. I can't seem to kill it even when i get the drop on it. 2 ak mags dumped into it and its not going down. Whats up about that? Dont remember them being that hard... Dont remember seeing one this quick in the other games haha!

Shotgun is your best friend killing mutants, i think you can granade the bastard too, it flies around a tiny room so it should blast it to bits.

I thought it was bulletproof because it wasn't going down. so i chased it around with knife and killed it.

I guess the prologue has a poltergeist in Veteran mode. It does not seem it have one in Stalker mode.

I just walked around the boat, come back after to get any loot when you got some actual gear, then just hose it with bullets

It took a moment. But I was relentless of chasing it down with a pistol on 2nd ship level (captain deck), When you're mid-distance, it can't attack you. So keep pushing it. The loot and ammo waste, imho, not worth it. But its your first poltergeist experience.
