Controls are a mess if you rebind keys.

climb and descend ladder do not change with direction key rebinds. they are Statically bound to W and S. Static binds in a game with customizable controls are a big NO NO, its one of my BIGGEST PET PEEVES. cause it screws up my accessibility. I dont screw around with carpel tunnel syndrom, and the Lean mechanics with WASD bloody Mangled my writs with the fist stalker. in fact this was the game that forced me to move to RDFG to save my hands. saves the wrist and also now you have A and S to lean with out having to pick up your finger from the movement keys.

ladders were always tricky in stalker. you interact with one to latch onto it. Once attached to the ladder then you use W and S to climb up or down. You must also Detach from ladders to exit them properly.

Yeah, the keybinding isn't very good in this game. Being a lefty I use the Num Lock keys and they aren't set up properly. Also, I have just found out that if you have set the arrow keys for movement, you have to use the W & S keys to climb up and down a ladder.

go there and figure out what it means but basically I'm guessing you can change the binds for everything.

for example using a ladder and movement are 2 different keybinds.

Thanks for your message, had a look but sadly could only see the options for sliding down & sprinting up ladders. Sadly, I think it's accidentally hard bounded to W & S.
