Use the portal spell. If for some reason you don't have it (e.g. the mission with the no spells nor potions achievement), keep 2-3 units always in the dungeon.
Same strategy to deal with hero portals.
I swear it's D3 all over again, people don't use 10% of the tools at their disposal and blame the game for being too hard and unbalanced.
That said, manavores are annoying and must be exterminated.

ANNOYING mechanic.
Portaling to deal with Manavores = annoying chore
Portaling to deal with the few Heroes that survived the trap tunnel = worthwhile
Portaling because this level's script has spiders/something that chew through any wall you build, regardless of your design = annoying chore
there are even very creative ways of keeping them around fed and leveled at the dungeon entrance and they will fight heroes for you.
if you may notice: they only become enraged when being attacked
Absolutely agreed on picking up the mana as soon as the notification pops; otherwise it's wasted.
But (at least in the last ~2 patches), they go running toward your rooms shortly afterward -- presumably, to where the next balls of mana are stored. I haven't tinkered with it enough to determine if they'll follow a trail to a trap tunnel or not; it's just faster to kill them and get back to the raiding.
