So I would recommend getting Dungeons 3 for cheap first or you could always get this game and refund in 2 hours if you really don't like it but it's a mix between a story mode game, rts and dungeon creator where the rts part is light enough that you can work on curtailing your dungeon if you want.
also I would say D3 and D4 are on equal footing and which is better is matter of opinion.
I agree, if you like the original dungeon keeper then War for the Overworld, is your game, unfortunately it looks like they aren't creating more. but with tonnes of workshop items, I have played for 1,000's hrs. The next best DK remake is Dungeons 2 (500+hrs), which for me is far far more repayable than 3 and 4, nearer the original DK mechanic.
Though I don't slate Dungeons series at all. They are all good and very funny and there should be more games in the genre!!
Definitely play 3 before 4. They both good, but I'm kind of getting bored with the limited evil in 4. I like to base and army build in my own time they do one large overworld conquer, rather than frequent small skirmished to the surface. But I can see that other people prefer the opposite.
EDITED FYI (sorry to promote another game, but if you play War for the Overworld, fans of the original DK's have recreated all the levels as workshop items.)
