Awakening is sort of a mix of new content, new challenges, and NG+. It will be unlocked once you defeat the final boss. In Awakened mode, however, he is no longer that, why I'll tell you right away.

After that you can start a new run, you keep your skill tree, your tickets and your heroes, but you lose your equipment. But there are new bosses, new items and new heroes. You can also earn permanent boosts.

I can't say more about it yet, the whole thing has only recently been added.
