Check out a game called "Exanima". SOMEWHAT similar but still a great game and could be lumped into a genre of games like this one. Check it out on steam and see if it's for you.

Lunacid just released from early access. It's pretty great and very atmospheric.

I totally concur with Lunacid and Mundaun - well worth your time if you enjoyed Northern Journey!
- Dear Esther is probably closest in terms of environment feel (and has a SUPERB soundtrack by Jessica Curry! Worth checking out on its own!) but Dear Esther is only a short experience. (about 3 hours)

Sorry to necro an old post but if you're still looking for similar games, I'd definitely recommend Kings Field IV and Shadow Tower: Abyss. They're old FromSoft PS2 games with great atmosphere and pretty similar gameplay and exploration (tho KFIV is a lot more focused on melee combat).

scotland isnt a game but is very similar to northern journey. we even have giant spiders (if you know where to look)
