Can't dig for soil

I have a shovel and can plant seedlings, but for some reason I can't dig for soil or treasure. Any tips? The wiki mentions you get soil for digging, but not how to actually get the option to dig. Focusing on the area doesn't show any options, just the soil information (e.g. neutral soil).

If you position yourself facing directly south you should be able to 'focus' then a spade icon shows up and then 'use' to dig. The area needs to be clear of plants so watch out for chamomile. I'm not able to get the dig working in other directions.
