Gadgets: Portal, Resource Packer
Supplements: Triple bombs, Teleport resources (portal)
Focus on upgrading bombs above all (make sure you pick the directional impact upgrade first), get 1 mining upgrade and 2 each in speed and carry weight in the first ~third of the game when you have enough iron, upgrade your portal to let you take bombs through it, and then in the last half bomb your way deep into the map to find the big iron deposits. Upgrading Resource Packer is quite important once you've found tons of iron and your portal can't keep up with transporting it one-by-one.
But I have also failed with these tactics, depending on the map generation, so there might be a more reliable way to do it.
With a lot of experience it is possible to finish this mission in about 12-15 min.
My strategy was: Drones and syntethizer, with belt and teleport for later.
The strategy is simple: dig horizontally each 3 tiles from 2nd vertically. That way you'll cover too much terrain and get much iron. Upgrade your drill to dig faster and deeper and carry the resources. Upgrade the sintethyzer so it'll sintethyze faster and automatically water into iron. Upgrade the drones so there are much and fast. Use the water and iron deposits if you're lucky and find them. Once you have enough upgrades, stop buying and just dig and take resource to the belt until you got 200 iron.
Edit: I see now how the Packer works and why it works with the drones. I should've tried it earlier.
Resource packer, if I translated it correctly, merges and shrinks resources into 1 more manageable pack, allowing drones take more than 1 resource, and preventing you slowing down, allowing you carry more resources in one go.
You could do it with Iron Worms for sure, with a different build. But in the most efficient mining build for Engineer that I described (it was well tested in Miner Mode), you are not going up to the dome, so there is no way to grab worms.
It's definitely a challenge, though. Ran right up to the time limit, basically was zooming back with the last handful of iron I needed going "AAAAA" and dived at the console to pause time while the resource grinding animation happened.
From your testing, what's a good stopping point for the drill upgrade and drone upgrades (# of them and speed).
Well it is from Miner Mode and maps are bit bigger on it than on assignments, I think, but drill42 or drill32, both best with Power Drill and 11 drones at speed almost full speed (or full speed).
There is also a nice setup with Assessor with exploding spheres and Drilling Ring plus supplement for it. Add to that One Way Teleport and you have full setup with just 2 gadgets and 2 supps.
Will try again with the other gadgets mentioned here.
