I don't think the developer intended challenge levels to only be beatable in one hyper specific way, but that's the only thing I've found with any sense of reliability or hope.
Drones early on with battle ones helps a lot to pick off extra stuff to lessen the load you have to deal with. The arty dome I find far too slow and clumsy to work well and it's not what I used to finish all the challenge maps, I preferred the laser dome for some, and tesla for others personally.
As for the extra gadget, that one is up to what works best for you, but for like dense and such the worms are fantastic, others have better choices, you just pick the gadget that pairs well as a starter with whatever challenge it is.
Overall seems like it's super luck based, if I get that triple bomb supplement or shock hammer early, then the run is doable, otherwise I die lol.
