The Assessor is stronger everywhere else.
Engineer's main drawback is a lack of efficiency, as well as a lack of specialization. It takes them longer to do common tasks, especially transporting resources, and they can't easily multitask without relying on a digging/logistics gadget. It should also be said that Engineer's upgrades are really iron-hungry later on, but are also semi-mandatory if you want to remain versatile.
Assessor's main advantage is multitasking, since their orbs/bundles continue working after being released, which allows them to dig while transporting resources and vice versa. Bundles are insanely good as well, especially once upgraded, since they don't have a maximum carry capacity. Assessor also has a small edge in upgrade costs and decision making, since their expanded upgrade tree naturally leads to specialization; which simultaneously makes gadget/supplement choices easier and enables you to skip some upgrades (and spend the iron elsewhere!). Lastly, Assessor's mining tools can somewhat ignore rock hardness since their orbs turn the rock against itself (and compression mining literally ignores a portion of hardness).
Assessor has two key drawbacks compensating for all their strengths: Their digging relies on cooldowns and they have a much steeper learning curve than Engineer. If you aren't careful with orb usage, the Assessor can end up doing nothing for long periods while waiting for cooldowns. This is especially felt with orbs since their cooldown increases when you upgrade their strength, which can punish you if you over-upgrade them. Assessor's wide upgrade tree is a drawback as well if you're not careful, since the mining upgrades all impact the same thing it's easy to overspend iron on elements you aren't actually using; such as orb duration when you're using exploding orbs. It's also worth mentioning that Assessor can't shoot orbs/bundles if they're holding anything, which can make gadgets like Drillbert and teleporter annoying to use.
