It was very lucky run, but anyway I'm glad I beat this mode.
You're either full of ♥♥♥♥ or the challenge has been adjusted since you beat it. I've played through all guild assignments on normal and first two on challenge and had no real problems. Now I tried different set-ups with upside down and can't find anything that works.
The challenge is overtuned imo and as others stated. The waves get too strong way too fast. And yes, I've obviously used the inverted gravity mechanic to send resources to the dome. It doesn't help, you can't gather enough fast enough.
It still took me multiple tries. I think you have to get lucky with how the world is generated. I rushed to get the shockwave hammer ASAP with the deadly shockwave supplement. I did get a couple of the cheap keeper upgrades early on, but afterwards prioritized both shockwave hammer damage upgrades, the slow enemies repellent ability, and a couple of laser damage upgrades. At that point I could handle the waves and play pretty normally from then on.
Now I'd love to know how you're supposed to beat Monster Masses on challenge mode because the waves ramp up even faster than Upside Down. That's the only one I have left and all my attempts have gone poorly so far.
If you're playing as the Engineer, get the first upgrade to your mining power, then go for the weapon upgrades. When resources are on a flat surface, just grab the ones at the side to push everything else down the shaft. It's why strip mining is the optimal method for this challenge run.
I played as the Assessor, and I delayed getting any upgrades for my Keeper for quite a while. But once I saw that I could handle the waves well enough, I got my Exploding Spheres and started to quickly get to max upgrades with the weapon.
Regardless of which Keeper you use, upgrading your weapon early on is a must. I try to get at least 1 strength and 1 speed upgrade for my laser. If you get Double Lasers early, go for damage instead; at most just the first speed upgrade.
