It's a rogue-lite.

There's things to progress in like different domes (weapons), different weapon ability unlocks (permanent), and gadgets (support).

There are maps to finish which could unlock permanent buffs to your dome, though, only basic ones like radars, storage, health meter etc.

Once you finish a run (any size map, any difficulty as far as I know), you can unlock new game modes and the ones I've mentioned above.

Edit:
Once you die in a run, you either restart with the same 'equipment' you came in with or retry with a different set of your choosing. Also there's a save option, though I haven't tried it.

It is definitely not pure in that sense, but i'd say it's 95% roguelike. People who expect a roguelite are disappointed with Dome, we get that a lot - because it is not a roguelite. It doesn't offer the meta progression you expect. It is designed as a roguelike, but i see no value to restrict it within arbitrary bounds.

Antorius in another thread explained the difference well, at least how i see it too:

If a run is over when you die (i.e., you can't just reload from a save slot or something) then the game has permanent death, end of story. If there are mechanics in place to make the player stronger next run, such as a perks system or item/currency cache -- games like Hades and Everspace come to mind -- then it's not a Roguelike, rather a Roguelite. Roguelites are designed around the notion that most players will not be able to overcome the default difficulty without first scaling up. This is where the "grinding" comes in, but if the game has been designed well then it shouldn't feel like grinding, per se. I consider Isaac not to fall into the Roguelite category. Although you can unlock characters, items and story -- so there is "meta-progression" in that sense -- the playable character does not get stronger. (Also, the game gets harder due to additional levels and diluted item pool.)

It is now, in fact, a roguelite.

You can now unlock permanent bonuses that affect your run in a very real way and save you resources you'd have to spend to unlock them.

Are they minor bonuses? Yes.

Do they permanently save you resources, making your runs easier? Yes.

Rougelite! I like rougelites too.

Thanks peeps, i personally prefer roguelites with considerable meta progression. It's a bit hard to judge here if it's enough for me. Would have liked a demo to make that choice easier and to not have to ask around, sadly not available.

It is not a roguelite. If you are looking for a roguelite, Dome Keeper will be disappointing, because it does not offer a meaningful meta progression like Hades oder Rogue Legacy or the like.
It is more like the binding of isaac or nuclear throne or into the breach, where you unlock new things to play with but you don't get numerically stronger by grinding a meta currency.
If you want to mine and want it to be a roguelite, then Wall World might be for you. It's a "fast follow" of Dome Keeper (so similar in nature) but went into the roguelite direction. Many people have a good time with it too, and it's really cheap.

I like roguelikes sometimes too but it's often a hit or miss I might give dome keeper a try in the future. I'll give wallworld a go though, thanks for the recommendation :)
