The laser works pretty well in general but the mortar is more powerful once you get the hang of it. Use a logistics primary gadget, but offensive extra ones. If you don't max basically everything offensive, you're under-equipped; invest more into logistics to get more resources out.

I like the mortar dome. Get the twice then four-time firing shells and you'll be able to just aim straight up and cover near both sides at the same time without issue. Auto-guiding rockets are also pretty great because aerial enemies don't seem to have more than 40-60HP at most and they also work well when you get the upgrade to aim all the way to the ground. I think I'm kinda spoiled already and don't want to try the others because leading targets isn't difficult for me.

Mortar dome, with Droneyard, works quite well. Droneyard is both offensive and logistics, which makes it well suited for this particular challenge. IF you get the condenser and IF you get the augment so it auto-augments the drones, that's fine, but that's also two big IF's and not generally worth trying for. You're better off picking up missiles and such.

Thanks for the suggestions. Second try of Mortar dome and don't need cobalt for repair.
Mine 500 up resources.

I do drones, and max them out. Actually drones makes almost every challenge easier. Not easy in some cases, but easier.

I finally beat this challenge, I'll share my strat.
Start with Probe, Artillery Dome, and Droneyard.
I started by upgrading the Probe to increase range & reveal all rocks. This helps you pinpoint water nodes as you'll need a lot. The Prospecting Meter might work as well but I just prefer seeing the rock types to gauge where to dig faster.
Begin to collect water to upgrade the mining drones. Number & speed as needed.
And of course upgrade your own drill to get through tougher rock once you go deeper.
Focus on revealing rocks and upgrading probe/drones/miner for the first 10~15 cycles. Eventually you'll be finding large iron deposits that the drones can carry for you while you run around and grab water and new gadgets.
Once you're around cycle 7~5 you should hurry and upgrade your damage & defenses.
For the Artillery Dome I went large radius explosions, multiple mortar shots, and homing missiles. I also chose instant deploy battle drones. And don't forget to upgrade the dome's health. Also finding passive dome upgrades from mining (like shields or lasers) can help too.
(I was really lucky and got an upgrade that healed the dome 1 time for free, don't know if I needed it tho.)
For the final battle I just held down the homing missile button and spammed mortars back and forth. Focus any large enemies that may drain your health.
Took me a lot of tries but ultimately like other people have said: focus on material collection for as long as possible so by the time you have to fight you're swimming in iron.

I personally did it with Double Laser. Being able to take out enemies on both sides helps a lot. When the big flying prick appears, put both lasers on it to melt it down.

I think I used the Repellent to slow things down too. You could get the one that has the enemies take more damage, but it lasts for only a short time. Having things crawl into my laser worked much better. Drones also work well, especially if you play as the Engineer for the Resource Packer + Drone combo.

As for Gadgets, get the Spire and go with the X shots before charging + projectile split; it helps a lot with damaging things. If you have any spare resources after upgrading everything else, just spam upgrading the amount of shots it can fire before needing a recharge.

Also try to get the Shockwave Hammer. Just go for the damage upgrades; no need for the stun since the increase in cooldown is a bit much for a single wave.

The hard part is honestly the RNG to getting these things + getting enough resources. At the start, only upgrade your Keeper abilities. This is because you need to prioritize what you upgrade, and you should make sure you don't lock yourself out of anything crucial. That said, you should have enough time to get everything.

Oh, and if you can't reroll your options which are all not the above, but one of them is the Furnace, get it. It's supplement is a constant 70% slow to all enemies, which is the same as what the Repellent can give. If you have this, get the damage boost for the Repellent instead.

The best upgrade for this mode though should be the Resurrection. The invulnerability it gives should give you plenty of time.
