Destructible, although very slowly. You don't want to do that by hand, pick a bomb or a drillbert at the start.

My vote goes to the new Iron Worms. Those things are insanely useful in that challenge, as they mine out all the iron leaving plain dirt blocks that break easily, in addition to giving you bonus iron allowing you to get more upgrades.

Drilling rig has a set mining speed you can upgrade.
Plus mines through bedrock (downward only)
Using it makes several guild assignments trivial.

You need to unlock additional gadgets. To do that you need to play assignment, find a gadget and win. Then you get it as an option for other assignments. This could have been a bit better explain in the game, I guess :D
