I tried it on a 6 earlier and it grew 3 before I ended the game out of boredom. Wasn't sure if it was done growing.
Honestly the seed is so slow I tend to just avoid it for now.
I was thinking about this too, but if you set it on 3 it can actually spawn 3 ore every cycle. I guess it depends a lot on your current state, but if you can get it up and you're not dying I think it's worth growing instead of mining. It takes a while to grow initially too, but I am not sure how many cycles, anyone tracked it?
better for longer runs
The best tree placement imo is on any resource next to the lift/centre shaft. I confirm that 4 blocks of Iron gives 3/cycle, so placing it on 3 blocks of Iron seems like an alright deal. It takes a few cycles to grow, maybe 3-4, then 4 cycles after that would have produced 12 Iron and you can still mine the Iron its growing on.
It gives much more Iron than the resources its sitting on if you plant it early enough during a Large/Huge/Prestige map run.
next time i play i count and mention it in me text above
Whelp, on additional testing i found that water regrows every 2 days, cobalt every 3, i have only ever been able to get it to grow one of the rare resources, but i have not had a chance to plant it on multiple of either water or cobalt. It may grow multiple of them if planted on multiple water/cobalt.
There is no need to keep 3 iron hexes under the tree.

Keep in mind it takes roughly one cycle per tile the roots spread to, so if you are trying to link up remote resources with the roots, it can take many waves and then it still has to grow normally after.
