How to use binoculars?

I've seen videos where the player uses some sort of binocular view to spot enemies. And it even has a view point where the binoculars seem to be located at mast height. How do you enable the binoculars? I did not find any key from the control settings that would enable that. Is the function boat specific? I'm playing the campaign with the '81 prototype.

There is a zoom button, probably not what you are looking for though.

When you use left shift to magnify, a scroll wheel indicator should pop up and you will be able to use the scroll wheel to go into and through the three levels of binoculars.
