Boat Crew

I see that submarines are still BS to fight against...
I initially got the early access late last year and played a fair bit but took a longer break from it due to personal life. I really like that the game has been getting some steady improvements and more content over the past months.
However, I just started playing a new campaign again and met my first supply submarines in the campaign. I had depth charges so I thought it shouldn't be a problem to sink two of them. However, upon blasting one of the subs, both of them surfaced and immediately blasted my boat from point blank-range. The submarine that I had hit then decided to finally die after firing its deck gun once or twice, but the second one, which was getting blasted with my machine guns (and thus realistically shouldn't have any crew left on its deck) kept on blasting my boat without me being able to either evade or repair in time.

I still have massive issues with the fact that enemies keep on fighting for moments after they are technically declared dead by the game. I don't think it makes sense, considering that the crew is literally firing from a sinking vessel that is listing heavily, or even outright sinking beneath the waves. I think that this makes the game more tedious and less rewarding to actually get the kill on enemies, particularly larger foes that need subduing.
Submarines, in particular, need to have a longer time between surfacing and their ability to shoot, as it doesn't make sense that they essentially come out of the water with their crew already on deck, ready to pounce on the boat that is only 5 metres away.

Hi, truth be told we are not too happy about the submarine mechanics either, which have been in the game more or less unchanged since the closed beta. We would like to add additional restrictions to them using the deck gun and also tune their behavior, but simply put, other things had the priority. But you can rest assured we share your concerns with the submarines and would like to improve their behavior at some point in Early Access.

As for ships keeping firing while sinking in general, it's been in the game long enough that I personally think it's part of the charm of the game (from hell's heart they stab at thee), though the new secondary explosions system seems to kill most if not all weapons on sinking ships quite regularly, and so this should end up being less common than it is now.

Thank you for the honest answer. I was genuinely frustrated but also just had a bit of a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ day, so the submarines blasting me without reason gave me the rest. I haven't followed the recent updates too closely, so maybe my experience will be different going forward.

I mean I can see a destroyer shooting a last few volleys before it slips beneath the waves. If I were about to die, I sure as heck would love to take out the schmuck who killed me! lol

Sorry about your day Pulderex, hope you're having a better one today.

Until submarines are reworked, the following has worked well for me:
After dropping the depth charge, immediately turn at flank speed towards the stern of the sub. Then stay behind it. It cannot hit you as the conning tower is between you and the gun. From that position you can just idle there and shoot it until it sinks.

Try dropping the charge slightly ahead of it's conning tower while it's submerged, and it will sink without surfacing. Make the turn anyway, just in case. Practice makes perfect :-)
