Multimission setup with fore 3inch, aft 4x0.50in and tubs with 20mm (2 loaders 1 repairman, no medic) works well if you add Mk27 torps and Hedgehog. Boat is a tad slow though, since we cannot yet do engine mods yet.
ASW isn't needed either, too rare of a target anyways.
I agree that medic's are rarely important.
I typically build to dual 3 inch guns, 20mm tub guns, and a full spread of Mk. 27's.
With this, I usually run 4 gunners, 2 loaders, 1 repairman, and 1 medic.
The last thing I do is arm everyone but my captain with a 50/50 mix of BAR's and Bazooka's as last resort weapons.
I'll usually run the 3 inch guns fully manned for most engagements.
The Mk. 27's can dual role against subs, on the rare occasion I see them.
The 20mm's are pretty much just there for reserve, or I'll have either one of the gun teams, or the rep and medic, man them when I get jumped by aircraft.
I personally hate the rockets and hedgehogs. I think the mortars are the most useful utility weapons, followed by the pack howitzer, with the 37mm and AT gun being distant last.
It's similar with attacking land except there Bofors is far far more ammo-efficient than 3 inch.
The game states muzzle velocity of 1000 m/s for Oerlikon and Bofors. And only 400 m/s for 3 inch. Now that you have at least this bit of data from the game try thinking about it.
Howitzer needs to be manually fired.
