This means you can open the inventory screen in your workshop, go make dinner, take a shower, eat, and come back to close said inventory and see the machines' timers have gone down considerably and some may be finished - while the time of day in game hasn't changed. Critters may have wandered across the island doing whatever they were doing, orrrr may be still in bed or at work, depending on where they already were. You can't use this to cheat tourists though, as they don't seem to start on anything new while the inventory's open so they won't spend any money.
